According to a AAA survey of 142 driving instructors across America, 65% said the decline in quality parental involvement has added to the challenges facing young drivers. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"\">They also reported that parents often set a bad example through their own behaviors.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_361484\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/AAA-Identifies-Top-Challenges-for-Teens-Learning-to-Drive.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-361484\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-361484\" title=\"Teen Driver Safety Week is October 16th \u2013 22nd\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/AAA-Identifies-Top-Challenges-for-Teens-Learning-to-Drive-480x351.jpg\" alt=\"Teen Driver Safety Week is October 16th \u2013 22nd\" width=\"480\" height=\"351\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-361484\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Teen Driver Safety Week is October 16th \u2013 22nd<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWith all the other challenges teens face learning to drive, it is critical for parents to re-engage in the process,\u201d said Stephanie Milani, Tennessee Public Affairs Director, AAA \u2013 The Auto Club Group. \u201cTeens can\u2019t succeed safely on the road unless those closest to them make proper training a priority and set a good example behind the wheel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h4>In the survey, Skills of Novice Teen Drivers, driving instructors also revealed the top three mistakes teens make when learning to drive:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Speeding<\/strong> &#8211; Traveling over posted speed limits or too fast for road conditions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Distraction<\/strong> &#8211; Interacting with a cell phone, talking with passengers or looking at other objects in the vehicle.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Poor Visual Scanning<\/strong> &#8211; Driving with tunnel vision and not properly scanning the road for risks or hazards.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Past research shows that teens with parents who impose stricter driving limits reported fewer crashes and traffic violations.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Teen-Driver-Safety.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-361485\" title=\"Teen Driver Safety\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Teen-Driver-Safety-480x432.jpg\" alt=\"Teen Driver Safety\" width=\"480\" height=\"432\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>AAA recommends parents stay actively involved in coaching their teens through the learning-to-drive process by:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Having conversations early and often about the dangers of speeding and distraction<\/li>\n<li>Taking the time to practice driving with their teens in varying conditions<\/li>\n<li>Adopting a Parent-Teen Driving Agreement that takes the learning to drive process in stages and sets family rules for the road<\/li>\n<li>Setting a good example by minimizing distractions and speeding when driving<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>AAA also recommends that teens preparing for the responsibility of driving should enroll in a driver education program that teaches how to avoid driver distraction and other safety skills.
