{"id":11537,"date":"2016-07-14T18:00:07","date_gmt":"2016-07-14T23:00:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.paristn.net\/articles\/?p=11537"},"modified":"2016-07-14T15:32:18","modified_gmt":"2016-07-14T20:32:18","slug":"aaa-reports-nearly-80-percent-of-drivers-express-significant-anger-aggression-or-road-rage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.paristn.net\/articles\/2016\/07\/14\/aaa-reports-nearly-80-percent-of-drivers-express-significant-anger-aggression-or-road-rage\/","title":{"rendered":"AAA reports Nearly 80 Percent of Drivers Express Significant Anger, Aggression or Road Rage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span id=\"\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-35320\" title=\"AAA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/AAA.gif\" alt=\"AAA\" width=\"200\" height=\"122\" \/>Knoxville, TN <\/strong>&#8211; Nearly 80 percent of drivers expressed significant anger, aggression or road rage behind the wheel at least once in the past year, according to a new study released today by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"\">The most alarming findings suggest that approximately eight million U.S. drivers engaged in extreme examples of road rage, including purposefully ramming another vehicle or getting out of the car to confront another driver.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Road-Rage.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-350881\" title=\"Road Rage\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Road-Rage-480x198.jpg\" alt=\"Road Rage\" width=\"480\" height=\"198\" \/><\/a><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"\">\u201cInconsiderate driving, bad traffic and the daily stresses of life can transform minor frustrations into dangerous road rage,\u201d said Stephanie Milani, Tennesee Public Affairs Director, AAA &#8211; The Auto Club Group. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"\">\u201cFar too many drivers are losing themselves in the heat of the moment and lashing out in ways that could turn deadly,\u201d stated Milani.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span id=\"\">A significant number of U.S. drivers reported engaging in angry and aggressive behaviors over the past year, according to study estimates:<\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><span id=\"\"><strong>Purposefully tailgating:<\/strong> 51 percent (104 million drivers)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span id=\"\"><strong>Yelling at another driver:<\/strong> 47 percent (95 million drivers)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span id=\"\"><strong>Honking to show annoyance or anger:<\/strong> 45 percent (91 million drivers)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span id=\"\"><strong>Making angry gestures:<\/strong> 33 percent (67 million drivers)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span id=\"\"><strong>Trying to block another vehicle from changing lanes:<\/strong> 24 percent (49 million drivers)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span id=\"\"><strong>Cutting off another vehicle on purpose:<\/strong> 12 percent (24 million drivers)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span id=\"\"><strong>Getting out of the vehicle to confront another driver: <\/strong>4 percent (7.6 million drivers)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span id=\"\"><strong>Bumping or ramming another vehicle on purpose:<\/strong> 3 percent (5.7 million drivers)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span id=\"\">Nearly 2 in 3 drivers believe that aggressive driving is a bigger problem today than three years ago, while nine out of ten believe aggressive drivers are a serious threat to their personal safety.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Rage-Aggression-on-the-Road.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-350882\" title=\"Rage &amp; Aggression on the Road\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Rage-Aggression-on-the-Road-480x360.jpg\" alt=\"Rage &amp; Aggression on the Road\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4><span id=\"\">Aggressive driving and road rage varied considerably among drivers:<\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><span id=\"\">Male and younger drivers ages 19-39 were significantly more likely to engage in aggressive behaviors. For example, male drivers were more than three times as likely as female drivers to have gotten out of a vehicle to confront another driver or rammed another vehicle on purpose.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span id=\"\">Drivers living in the Northeast were significantly more likely to yell, honk or gesture angrily than people living in other parts of the country. For example, drivers in the Northeast were 30 percent more likely to have made an angry gesture than drivers in other parts of the country.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span id=\"\">Drivers who reported other unsafe behaviors behind the wheel, such as speeding and running red lights, also were more likely to show aggression. For example, drivers who reported speeding on a freeway in the past month were four times more likely to have cut off another vehicle on purpose.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span id=\"\">\u201cThere will always be things that can cause frustration with other drivers when you\u2019re behind the wheel, said Amy Stracke, AAA\u2019s Managing Director of Traffic Safety Advocacy. \u201cHowever, it\u2019s i<\/span><span id=\"\">mportant they don\u2019t get in the way of good decision making and distract you from getting to your destination safely.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[320center]<\/p>\n<h4><span id=\"\">AAA offers these tips to help prevent road rage:<\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><span id=\"\"><strong>Don\u2019t Offend<\/strong>: Never cause another driver to change their speed or direction. That means not forcing another driver to use their brakes, or turn the steering wheel in response to something you have done.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span id=\"\"><strong>Be Tolerant and Forgiving<\/strong>: Don\u2019t let emotions interfere by assuming the other driver intentionally did something to offend.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span id=\"\"><strong>Do Not Respond<\/strong>: Avoid eye contact, don\u2019t make gestures, maintain space around your vehicle and contact 9-1-1 if needed.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span id=\"\">The research report is available on the AAA Foundation\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aaafoundation.org\/prevalence-self-reported-aggressive-driving-behavior-united-states-2014\" >website<\/a> and is part of the annual Traffic Safety Culture Index, which identifies attitudes and behaviors related to driver safety. The data was collected from a national survey of 2,705 licensed drivers ages 16 and older who reported driving in the past 30 days.
