Everyone thinks it won\u2019t happen to them and it always happens to somebody. Participants will become eligible to win a football autographed by Tennessee Titan Delanie Walker and safe driving items.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe contest is something new we are doing this year,\u201d said GHSO Public Information Officer Amanda Brown. \u201cIt\u2019s one thing for our office to remind you to designate a sober driver; it\u2019s another thing for you to hear about your friends\u2019 safe ride plans. We want to encourage that peer-to-peer conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>For those hosting Super Bowl parties this weekend, the following are some reminders to help keep attendees safe:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ask all of your guests to designate their sober drivers in advance, or help them arrange ride-sharing with sober drivers. If you don\u2019t drink, offer to drive guests home.<\/li>\n<li>Encourage your drinking guests to pace themselves.<\/li>\n<li>Serve plenty of food and non-alcoholic beverages at the party.<\/li>\n<li>Stop serving alcohol at the end of the third quarter\u2014this is a good time to serve coffee and dessert.<\/li>\n<li>Sign up online for a ride sharing service and keep the phone numbers of local cab companies on hand and take the keys away from any guests who are thinking of driving after drinking.<\/li>\n<li>Remember, if you serve a guest alcohol and he or she gets in a crash that night, you could be held liable.<\/li>\n<li>If an underage person drinks and drives, the parent or guardian can be legally liable for any damage, injury or death caused by the underage driver.<\/li>\n<li>Likewise, parents or other adults who provide alcohol to \u2013 or host a party where alcohol is available to \u2013 those under age 21, could face jail time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cThis Super Bowl will be one of the most celebrated in recent years as our very own Peyton Manning takes the field,\u201d TDOSHS Commissioner Bill Gibbons said. \u201cOne of the top priorities of the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security is to ensure Tennesseans are safe and secure on our roadways. Super Bowl Sunday is no exception. We value our partnership with TDOT and the Governor\u2019s Highway Safety Office. These partnerships are essential to our overall success of traffic safety education and enforcement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Six people were killed in traffic crashes during Super Bowl weekend last year. Of those, five were alcohol-related. \u201cWhen planning your Super Bowl festivities it is important to plan a safe ride home,\u201d said Tennessee Highway Patrol Colonel Tracy Trott. \u201cA sober ride home should be a part of everyone\u2019s game plan.
