{"id":10650,"date":"2015-11-15T08:00:10","date_gmt":"2015-11-15T14:00:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.paristn.net\/articles\/?p=10650"},"modified":"2015-11-15T03:12:50","modified_gmt":"2015-11-15T09:12:50","slug":"american-heart-association-says-a-few-minutes-of-activity-may-cut-blood-pressure-for-people-with-type-2-diabetes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.paristn.net\/articles\/2015\/11\/15\/american-heart-association-says-a-few-minutes-of-activity-may-cut-blood-pressure-for-people-with-type-2-diabetes\/","title":{"rendered":"American Heart Association says a few minutes of activity may cut Blood Pressure for people with Type 2 Diabetes"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>American Heart Association Meeting Report<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-56563\" title=\"American Heart Association\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/American-Heart-Association-new-logo-480x230.jpg\" alt=\"American Heart Association\" width=\"240\" height=\"115\" \/><strong>Orlando, FL<\/strong> &#8211; Just a few minutes of light activity for people who sit most of the day \u2013 a short stroll or some squats at your desk every thirty minutes \u2013 can lower <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.heart.org\/HEARTORG\/Conditions\/HighBloodPressure\/High-Blood-Pressure_UCM_002020_SubHomePage.jsp\" >blood pressure<\/a> for people with <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.heart.org\/HEARTORG\/Conditions\/Diabetes\/Diabetes_UCM_001091_SubHomePage.jsp\" >Type 2 diabetes<\/a>, according to research presented at the American Heart Association\u2019s Scientific Sessions 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers tracked blood pressure levels in 24 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.heart.org\/HEARTORG\/GettingHealthy\/WeightManagement\/Obesity\/Obesity-Information_UCM_307908_Article.jsp\" >overweight and obese<\/a> adults with Type 2 diabetes as they sat for eight hours. Participants either took 3-minute walking breaks averaging a speed about 2 miles per hour (mph) or did 3-minutes of simple <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.heart.org\/HEARTORG\/GettingHealthy\/PhysicalActivity\/FitnessBasics\/Strength-and-Resistance-Training-Exercise_UCM_462357_Article.jsp\" >resistance exercises<\/a> every half-hour.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_277182\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Blood-pressure-cuff.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-277182\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-277182\" title=\"Blood pressure cuff. (American Heart Association)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Compared to uninterrupted sitting:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Light walking was linked to an average 10-point drop in systolic blood pressure (the top number in a blood pressure reading).<\/li>\n<li>Simple resistance activities were associated with an average 12-point drop in systolic blood pressure.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cIt appears you don\u2019t have to do very much,\u201d said co-author Bronwyn Kingwell, Ph.D., head of Metabolic and Vascular Physiology at the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes in Melbourne, Australia. \u201cWe saw some marked blood pressure reductions over trial days when people did the equivalent of walking to the water cooler or some simple body-weight movements on the spot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Having both Type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure can significantly increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes.<\/p>\n<p>Previous research has shown that sitting for long periods of time raises risks of obesity, high blood pressure, high blood sugar, high cholesterol and cardiovascular disease, and that short bouts of physical activity can lower blood pressure in overweight non-diabetic people.<\/p>\n<p>Kingwell noted that this is the first study to examine effects of short intermittent bouts of light physical activity on Type 2 diabetes patients in a controlled lab setting.<\/p>\n<p>Participants were men and women, average age 62, who were overweight or obese. About two-thirds of the participants were on medication to control blood pressure during the study.<\/p>\n<p>For eight hours a day, on three separate days, they ate breakfast and lunch based on their calculated energy requirements. Researchers checked blood pressure and blood norepinephrine levels at regular intervals across the day.<\/p>\n<p>For light-intensity walking, participants took a slow, easy stroll on a treadmill. For simple resistance activities, they did half-squats, calf raises, knee raises, or gluteal muscle squeezes.<\/p>\n<p>[320left]Although it\u2019s not clear why taking breaks may help ease blood pressure for Type 2 diabetes, Kingwell said that muscles activated when you move increase blood sugar uptake, which is especially important among people with Type 2 diabetes since their bodies can\u2019t make enough insulin (or can\u2019t efficiently use insulin) to maintain healthy blood sugar levels.<\/p>\n<p>The parallel lowering in norepinephrine levels are also an intriguing candidate in relation to the blood pressure. Norepinephrine is a hormone that can raise heart rate and blood pressure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLight activity breaks are not meant to replace regular, purposeful exercise.
