“People shouldn’t have to worry that their money and personal financial information might be swiped by thieves when they swipe their credit card to make a purchase,” said TDCI Deputy Commissioner Bill Giannini. “Unfortunately, modern technology can leave us exposed to sophisticated scams and frauds. Tennesseans should closely monitor their credit card statements and always report any criminal activity.”

Here’s a primer on credit card skimmers and how thieves use them to hurt consumers:

What is skimming?

Skimming is the use of a small device called a skimmer to steal credit card information from a physical credit card. The skimmer scans the credit card’s magnetic strip to retrieve the credit card data. Once the card is swiped through the skimmer, the data is recorded and stored on the device. Scammers often skim credit cards to sell the information online for criminals to create counterfeit credit cards.

Skimming also transpires when an individual (i.e. waitress or retail employee) completes a valid credit card transaction, and then covertly captures a second, unauthorized swipe through the skimming device before returning the card to the cardholder. Once the individual skims the credit card, he or she may conduct a fraudulent transaction immediately afterwards, or the information may be stored for future use. Therefore, the cardholder is likely unaware until the fraudulent charges appear on the statement.
