Be sure to check license status at verify.tn.gov before hiring a contractor

Nashville, TN – After a very wet summer, it’s important for Tennesseans to make sure that any needed home repairs are serviced by a licensed contractor.

“We encourage individuals to vet contractors through verify.tn.gov [1] or through the Board for Licensing Contractors [2] before signing on the dotted line,” said the Regulatory Boards Assistant Commissioner Bill Giannini. “Never pay cash and always, ALWAYS, verify before you pay any money!”

The Department of Commerce and Insurance [3] (TDCI) offers the following tips to homeowners for interacting with insurance companies and selecting contractors.

Contractor Tips

Consumers can find great contractor related resources on the Board for Licensing Contractors [2] consumer resources page [5]. Again, the State encourages Tennesseans to regularly visit and utilize verify.tn.gov [1], which is the license database for dozens of professions (including home contractors). Consumers can and should check the license status of any contractor they consider hiring, not just ones from out of state. They also can find the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance [3]’s list of problem contractors at here [6] and the monthly disciplinary actions report posted at here [7].

The Contractors Board [2] can be reached at 1-800.544.7693 or by e-mailing Contractors.Home-Improvement@TN.Gov [8]. Both can be used to file complaints against a contractor.

Also be advised that the National Flood Insurance Plan [9] is a federally administered program, operated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. For further information, visit FEMA [9].
