Young Sportsman Deer Harvest sees slight increase over 2010

Muzzleloader Season Starts November 5th
Nashville, TN – Tennessee’s youth hunters posted a slight increase over 2010 after a busy weekend of deer hunting across the state in the Young Sportsman Hunt.
The youth hunters (ages 6-16) harvested 8,831 deer, an increase of 13 deer over the same weekend last year. It is also an increase of 629 over the 2009 totals as reported by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency.
For the second straight year, Giles County was the top county for the youth hunt with 284, also an increase of 13 from its 271 total of last year. Weakley County was again second with 234 and Fayette County moved to third from fourth from a year ago with 226. Henry County was close behind in fourth. Lawrence and Hardeman County each surpassed the 200-harvest number with 202 and 201, respectively. [Read more]
July 2011 County Unemployment Rates

Rate decreases in 90 counties, and increases in five
Nashville, TN – County non-seasonally adjusted unemployment rates for July 2011, released today show that the rate decreased in 90 counties. Five counties increased including Houston, Obion, Overton, Smith and Weakley.
Tennessee’s unemployment rate for July was 9.8 percent, unchanged from the June revised rate. The national unemployment rate for July 2011 was 9.1 percent, down from the June revised rate of 9.2 percent.
The unemployment rate in July for Henry County was 12.0 percent, down 0.7 percent from the June rate of 12.7 percent.
Federal Disaster assistance approved for Weakley County

Public Assistance will help local governments recover expenses
Nashville, TN – Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam announced today the federal government will provide Public Assistance to local governments in Weakley County under the current disaster declaration for the severe weather and flooding in West Tennessee with a federal designation of DR-1979.
Weakley County is now eligible to receive federal reimbursement in all categories of FEMA’s Public Assistance program. [Read more]

Dad got to England in July of 1944. Soon after he landed, he was on a landing craft headed for Normandy. As they crossed the English Channel, over the loudspeaker came the familiar voice of Roy Acuff singing, “The Great Speckled Bird.”
Years later, Dad would remember that no son of the South, and few from anywhere else, had dry eyes as Acuff sang that Grand Ole Opry favorite and their thoughts returned to home.
They hit Omaha Beach and before long were fighting in the hedgerows. A few days into combat, Dad was wounded, but it could have been much worse. For thousands, it was. So on he fought with his buddies, all part of the Ninth Infantry that famed war correspondent Ernie Pyle once called “a beautiful machine.”

Governor & Commissioner Identify Transportation Projects in TDOT’s Region Four for Funding

Projects to be funded through Bridge Bonding and Traditional Funds
Nashville, TN – Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam and Transportation Commissioner John Schroer today released the three-year transportation program, which includes the completion of several major strategic corridor projects and the state’s Better Bridges bonding program.
The three year program includes $1.7 billion for highways and bridges to fund more than 152 individual project phases in 59 Tennessee counties. The proposal, which has been presented to the Tennessee General Assembly, includes significant highway and bridge projects in TDOT’s Region Two. [Read more]

2010-11 Tennessee Deer Harvest sees small increase

Nashville, TN – Tennessee’s 2010-11 deer harvest numbers saw a slight increase over those of the previous year, Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency harvest reports have indicated.
As harvest numbers continued to trickle into the agency through January, Tennessee hunters harvested 162,465 deer beginning with the archery season in late September an increase of 644 from last year. [Read more]
Tennessee’s Second Segment of Gun Season for Deer starts today

Nashville, TN – Tennessee’s gun season for deer hunters resumes today, December 18th and will continue through January 9th. 2011.
Since archery season opened in late September, more than 122,500 deer have been harvested in the state. Giles County has the top overall harvest with 3,663. [Read more]
Tanner updates Tennesseans on changes in Local TV options

Washington, DC – U.S. Rep. John Tanner praised the enactment of a new law to give Tennesseans more options in TV channel lineups. S.3333, the “Satellite Television Extension and Localism Act of 2010,” also known as “SHVERA,” was signed into law recently. The law contains amendments that help further two of Congressman John Tanner’s priorities that impact Tennesseans’ channel lineup options.
“This new law gives 8th District families more access to local programming that originates from our state and best serves our communities,” Congressman Tanner said. “We have been fighting hard to make these improvements and will continue working to ensure local programming is available.” [Read more]
Paris Health Expo focuses on YOUR health and well-being

Paris and Henry County has shown it loves a good expo, an opportunity to peruse the diversity of opportunities that abound within this geographic area. February 7th’s Health Expo proved to be no exception. The Paris Civic Center was filled with healthcare consumers visiting the over thirty healthcare providers and allied services present to display their various wares and services and discuss health care information and options.

In a four hour block of time, from 8 a.m. to 12 noon, the Paris Civic Center was a buzz of activity as over six hundred visitors passed through the center’s doors during the sixth annual Healthcare Expo .
Visitors were greeted by Paris Chamber of Commerce representatives Jenifer Williams and Stacie Plunkett, and asked to sign-in and register for free door prizes and give-a-ways. Each visitor received a free gift bag to fill with the free hand-outs and gifts provided by the diverse vendors. Stacie is chairperson of the Chamber’s Healthcare Committee which coordinates the health expo.
At the center of the expo hall’s setup was Henry County Medical Center’s free testing and screening multi-station. Blood pressure checks, blood sugar reading, cholesterol reading, hand grip strength testing and osteoporosis screenings were provided free. The results were recorded and given to each visitor for review with their personal medical care provider. [Read more]
