Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency - TWRANashville, TN – Dove season opens on Friday, September 1st, 2017 at noon (local time), the annual start of one of Tennessee’s most long-standing outdoor sports traditions.

Tennessee’s 2017 season is again divided into three segments: September 1st through September 28th; October 14th through November 5th; and December 8th through January 15th, 2018.

Summer Deer Mortality Attributed to Common Virus

Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency - TWRANashville, TN – Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) offices are receiving reports of dead deer in scattered areas of the state. The timing and details of the reports are all indicative of hemorrhagic disease (HD).

HD occurs at varying levels of severity each year in Tennessee’s deer herd. The catch-all term for this disease is hemorrhagic disease (HD), and epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD) and bluetongue are the closely related viruses that fall under the umbrella of HD.

TWRA says that recent reports of dead deer being found is indicative of Hemorrhagic Disease.

2017 Application Period Underway for Peregrine Falcon Trapping for Falconry Usage

Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency - TWRANashville, TN – The 2017 application period for the trapping of a peregrine falcon to be used in falconry is underway, the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency has announced.

The TWRA will award the one permit to the winner of a draw to be held on Wednesday, August 30th, 2017. Falconers may go to TWRA’s website by clicking here for the print-ready application and also view the requirements. Resident and non-resident master and general falconers are eligible for participation in the draw. Completed applications must be postmarked by Wednesday, August 9th.

TWRA reports No Boating Related Fatalities over July 4th Weekend

Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency - TWRANashville, TN – The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency reported there were no boating-related fatalities over the 2017 Independence Day holiday period from June 30th through July 4th.

This year’s holiday period was extended with July 4th falling on a Tuesday. More than 10,700 boats were inspected during the five days. TWRA boating officers made 20 boating under the influence (BUI) arrests.

Officers issued 353 citations, and 303 warnings. They also assisted 483 boaters.

There were five accidents with four injuries over the July 4th Holiday Weekend.

August 4 Deadline to submit comments for 2017-2027 Statewide Trout Management Plan

Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency - TWRANashville, TN – The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency Fisheries Division has completed its latest draft of its Statewide Trout Management Plan. The plan is ready for review on the TWRA website in the “For Anglers” section.

The scope of this plan is to provide guidance for the conservation and management of Tennessee’s cold water resources on a statewide level and not to address the needs of any specific body of water.

9th annual Operation Dry Water set for June 30th-July 2nd Weekend

Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency - TWRANashville, TN – The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency will be participating in Operation Dry Water, June 30th-July 2nd, 2017. Operation Dry Water is a national weekend of Boating Under the Influence (BUI) awareness and enforcement campaign directed toward reducing alcohol and drug-related accidents and fatalities.

Operation Dry Water is held the weekend prior to the Independence Day (July 4th) holiday to give BUI enforcement high visibility during the peak boating season. The TWRA is teaming with the U.S. Coast Guard and the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA).

TWRA releases 2017 Memorial Holiday Weekend Boating Report

Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency - TWRANashville, TN – The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency is reporting that there were no boating-related fatalities over the 2017 Memorial Day holiday weekend.

It marks the third consecutive year without a boating fatality over the weekend. There have been seven boating-related fatalities so far in 2017.  

During the period from May 26th-29th, 2017 there was one injury accident and five property damage incidents.

Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency - TWRANashville, TN – Memorial Day holiday weekend is regarded as the unofficial start to the summer boating season and the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency wants to emphasize the use of life jackets while boating in a safe and responsible manner.

Annually, the Memorial Day weekend is one of the year’s busiest boating weekends. Last year, there were not any boating-related fatalities over the holiday weekend for the second consecutive year. There were six reported accidents, four of which resulted in injuries.

TWRA announces 2017 NASP State Championships return to Murfreesboro

Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency - TWRANashville, TN – The Tennessee National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) will hold its 11th state championships at the 2017 event set for March 30th-31st in Murfreesboro, TN.

The NASP State Championships will be returning to the Tennessee Miller Coliseum for the eighth consecutive year. A record field of close to 1,900 students is expected to participate. The students will be representing more than 90 schools.

TWRA announces 2017-18 Hunting and Fishing Licenses to go on Sale February 18th

Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency - TWRANashville, TN – The 2017-18 Tennessee hunting and fishing licenses will go on sale Saturday, February 18th.

Licenses are available at Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) regional offices, license agents, on the TWRA website, www.tnwildlife.org, and at the TWRA “On the Go App” and charged to a credit card.  

The 2017-18 licenses are valid through February 2018. License sales provide the primary funding for the TWRA, which does not receive any funding from the state’s general fund (i.e. state sales tax). The 2016-17 licenses expire February 28th.
