August 9th is the Deadline for Tennesseans to Register with FEMA

Federal Emergency Management Agency - FEMANashville, TN – Tennesseans who suffered losses due to severe spring weather have about six weeks remaining to apply for assistance. August 9th is the last day the Federal Emergency Management Agency will accept applications for individual assistance.

State and federal officials continue to encourage anyone with damage or other losses in the disaster-designated counties to register. “You may think you don’t need assistance, but you could later have disaster related losses,” said TEMA Director James H. Bassham “Registration with FEMA is free. It’s better to get your name in the system before the August 9th deadline. After that date, it will be too late.” [Read more]

Rate Decreases in 56 counties, increases in 24, and stays the same in 15

Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce DevelopmentNashville, TN – County non-seasonally adjusted unemployment rates for May 2011, released today, show that the rate decreased in 56 counties, increased in 24 counties, and stayed the same in 15 counties.

Tennessee’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for May was 9.7 percent, up slightly from the April rate of 9.6. The national unemployment rate for May 2011 was 9.1 percent, up from April’s 9.0 percent.

Department of Safety and Homeland Security to Issue New Driver Licenses, ID Cards

New Card Features Enhanced Security, Replaces Old Cards Upon Expiration

Tennessee Department of SafetyNashville, TN – Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security Commissioner Bill Gibbons on Tuesday announced the state will soon issue new and improved driver licenses and identification cards. The new license and its updated security features will help combat document fraud and protect the identities of Tennesseans by using the latest credentialing technology. This is the first major revision of Tennessee driver licenses and ID cards since 2003.

“A top priority of the Department of Safety and Homeland Security is safeguarding the identity of Tennessee citizens to prevent identity theft and document fraud,” said Commissioner Gibbons. “The new cards will be the most secure our state has issued to date.”

Tennessee Highway Patrol announces 2010 Dispatcher of the Year

The Tennessee Highway Patrol LogoNashville, TN – The Tennessee Highway Patrol today named Memphis Dispatcher Beverly Bearden the 2010 Dispatcher of the Year. Dispatcher Bearden is among more than 90 dispatchers working for the Department of Safety and Homeland Security across the state of Tennessee. Nine of those dispatchers were also recognized as Dispatcher of the Year in their respective district. The awards were announced during a Friday morning ceremony held at the THP Training Center in Nashville.

“There are 82 THP Communication Dispatchers and nine supervisors who are the unsung heroes of the Highway Patrol,” said THP Colonel Tracy Trott. “They show more concern for other people, than they do for themselves. While their work oftentimes goes unnoticed, they press on until the job gets done. They are the lifeline of the Highway Patrol and it is our honor to recognize them for their dedication and service.”

Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce DevelopmentNashville, TN – Tennessee’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for August was 9.6 percent, down one-tenth of a percentage point from the revised July rate of 9.7 percent. The national unemployment rate for August 2010 was 9.6 percent.

Emerald Ash Borer Discovered in East Tennessee

Plans underway to survey and restrict movement of ash material in Knox, Loudon counties

The Tennessee Department of AgricultureNashville, TN – The Tennessee Department of Agriculture today announced the discovery of emerald ash borer (EAB), the first detection of the destructive tree pest in the state. The discovery was made last week at a truck stop in Knox County near the Loudon County line.

“We knew EAB could potentially reach Tennessee, and we’re prepared to help slow the spread of the infestation and protect our forest resources.” said state Agriculture Commissioner Ken Givens. “We will be working closely with federal officials and other stakeholders to determine the extent of the infestation and to take steps to limit its spread.”
