Land Between the Lakes 2011 Archery Season

Land Between the LakesGolden Pond, KY – Land Between The Lakes (LBL) National Recreation Area deer archery season is open Saturday, September 24th, 2011 through January 16th, 2012. The only exception is for quota hunt days and the day immediately before each quota hunt.

The quota hunt days for the Tennessee portion are October 15th-16th, November 11th-12th, and November 26th-27th. The quota hunt days for the Kentucky portion are October 29th-30th and November 19th-20th.

Deer hunting provides a unique recreational opportunity within the LBL region and helps maintain a healthy deer population. LBL invites visitors to hone their archery skills on the archery practice range and field archery range trail at the Golden Pond Target Range. The range is located just off US68/KY80 and is open from dawn to dusk on a first-come, first-served basis. [Read more]

Eagle Scout Builds Osprey Nesting Platform at LBL

Daniel Hagan of Marshall County, Kentucky designed, built, and with the help of Pennyrile Electric in Cadiz, KY, installed an osprey nesting platform near Woodlands Nature Station in the KY portion of LBL. New data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show a decline in smoking rates in Tennessee. The Tennessee Department of Health offers free support to all Tennesseans who want to quit smoking through the Tennessee Tobacco QuitLine, 1.800.QUIT.NOW.

“We are encouraged by this data demonstrating that Tennesseans want to lead healthy lives free from tobacco,” said Health Commissioner Susan R. Tennessee Joins Neighboring States to Fight Prescription Drug Abuse, Trafficking

Tennessee Department of SafetyNashville, TN – In an effort to fight prescription drug abuse and misuse in Tennessee, representatives from the Governor’s Office, Department of Safety and Homeland Security, and the Department of Mental Health on Wednesday attended the first meeting of the Interstate Prescription Drug Task Force in Ashland, KY.

Tennessee joins Kentucky, Ohio, and West Virginia in forming a multi-state alliance to fight prescription drug abuse on several fronts.

LBL Quota Deer Hunt Applications Available Online July 1st

Land Between the LakesGolden Pond, KY – Applications for 2011 Quota Deer Hunts at Land Between The Lakes (LBL) National Recreation Area may be submitted online at www.lbl.org from July 1st through July 31st. The application fee is $5.00. After applying, applicants can enter the website with their user name and password in late-August to see if they were drawn.

Quota hunts not only provide unique recreational opportunities within the LBL region, they help maintain a healthy deer population. Deer harvested on LBL are bonus deer and do not count toward statewide bag limits. All quota hunt permits will be either-sex permits, and there is an LBL-wide one (1) antlered buck limit. The Tennessee Highway Patrol LogoNashville, TN - The Tennessee Highway Patrol took home a pair of first place awards for traffic safety public service announcements (PSA’s) at the 2011 Uniformed Safety Education Officers Workshop (U.S.E.O.W.) held in Louisville, KY, on June 5th through 9th. The THP won in both the television and radio public service announcement categories.

The U.S.E.O.W., whose mission is to protect people, life and property through educating the public on various safety issues, welcomed law enforcement agencies from Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Missouri, Mississippi, Nebraska, North Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Wyoming. This year’s event was hosted by the Kentucky State Police.

Preliminary Figures Show Decline in Fatal Crashes

Tennessee Department of SafetyNashville, TN - Preliminary figures from the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security show 10 people were killed in traffic crashes on Tennessee roadways during this year’s 78-hour Memorial Day holiday period. This is a drop from the 13 fatalities that occurred during the 2010 Memorial Day holiday weekend and 16 deaths in 2009.

The 2011 Memorial Day weekend ran from 6:00pm, Friday, May 27th through 11:59pm, Monday, May 30th. During that time, there were 10 fatal crashes that resulted in 10 fatalities. Six crashes were single vehicle wrecks, while four of them were multiple car crashes. Five of the people killed were vehicle occupants, four were motorcyclists and one was a pedestrian. Three of the five (60 percent) vehicle occupants killed were not wearing safety restraints.
