Consumers Who Lost Money to Scammers Via Western Union Can File a Claim to Get Money Back

Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance - TDCINashville, TN – The Tennessee Department of Commerce & Insurance’s (TDCI) Division of Consumers Affairs reminds Tennesseans that they must file claims before February 12th, 2018 to be reimbursed for money lost in scams using Western Union.

According to a consumer alert by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), consumers who lost money to scammers who told them to pay via Western Union’s money transfer system between January 1st, 2004 and January 19th, 2017, can now file a claim to get their money back by going to FTC.gov/WU before the February deadline.

Tennessee Consumer Affairs Do’s & Don’ts in Wake of Equifax Data Breach

Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance - TDCINashville, TN – With over 3 million Tennesseans’ sensitive information exposed in a data breach at the credit reporting firm Equifax, the Tennessee Department of Commerce & Insurance’s (TDCI) Consumer Affairs Division wants to help vulnerable consumers plan a course of action to protect themselves from scammers aiming to mine their data through bogus websites and phishing calls.  

According to Equifax, the breach lasted from mid-May through July and exposed the data of over 143 million Americans.

Tennessee Regulatory Authority (TRA) Imposes Fine For Violations of Do Not Call Law

Tennessee Regulatory AuthorityNashville, TN – The Tennessee Regulatory Authority (TRA) along with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and nine other states filed a complaint against Caribbean Cruise Line, Inc. for violating the Tennessee and federal Do Not Call Telemarketing laws and has issued a fine in the amount of $500,000.

Both telemarketing laws were established to prohibit unwanted telephone solicitation calls to consumers.

IRS Identifies Five Easy Ways to Spot Suspicious Calls

Internal Revenue Service - IRSWashington, D.C. – The Internal Revenue Service issued a consumer alert today providing taxpayers with additional tips to protect themselves from telephone scam artists calling and pretending to be with the IRS.

These callers may demand money or may say you have a refund due and try to trick you into sharing private information. These con artists can sound convincing when they call. They may know a lot about you, and they usually alter the caller ID to make it look like the IRS is calling. They use fake names and bogus IRS identification badge numbers. If you don’t answer, they often leave an “urgent” callback request.

Internal Revenue Service Repeats Warning about Phone Scams

IRS - Internal Revenue ServiceWashington, D.C. – The Internal Revenue Service and the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration continue to hear from taxpayers who have received unsolicited calls from individuals demanding payment while fraudulently claiming to be from the IRS.

Based on the 90,000 complaints that TIGTA has received through its telephone hotline, to date, TIGTA has identified approximately 1,100 victims who have lost an estimated $5 million from these scams. [Read more]
