School Bus Safety Tips

August 11, 2010

School Buses are the safest way to get to school. Safety Tips from the Tennessee Department of Safety

Bus Safety

The Danger Zone is the area on all sides of the bus where children are in the most danger of being hit. Children should stay ten feet away from the bus (or as far away as they can) and never go behind it. They should take five giant steps in front of the bus before crossing, so they can be seen by the driver.

School buses are nearly eight times safer than passenger vehicles. But children must take care when boarding or leaving the bus.

While an average of 7 school-age passengers are killed in school bus crashes each year, 19 are killed getting on and off the bus. Most of those killed are children from five to seven years old.

They are hit in the danger zone around the bus (A), either by a passing vehicle or by the school bus itself.

It is illegal for a vehicle to pass a bus with its red light flashing. [Read more]

Tests find 4 Recommended products consumers can use under new laws

Consumer ReportsYonkers, NY — There are several low-phosphate dishwasher detergents that performed very well in Consumer Reports’ latest tests, which is good news for the traditionally low-scoring eco-friendly products.

Consumer Reports tested 24 low- or no-phosphate dish detergents and found four Recommended products. Although none equaled the excellent (but now discontinued) product that topped CR’s Ratings in August 2009, seven were Very Good.

Consumer Reports testers smeared dishware with a mix of 17 foods (pots got a mac-and-cheese blend) and then baked on the foods and cleaned the items in identical dishwashers to assess how each detergent performed.

Consumer Reports picks Best Cars for Teens and Seniors

August 5, 2010

Honda Accord is the right fit for the young, old, tall and small

Consumer ReportsYonkers, NY — With the fall semester just around the corner, Consumer Reports offers its best choices for parents and teens out shopping for a car to bring back to school.

When looking for the right car for teens, including used models, Consumer Reports recommends picking cars with safety features such as electronic stability control and curtain air bags and good crash-test results.

“Often parents think that putting their child in the biggest car is the safest thing they can do, but that’s not so. Teens are the most inexperienced drivers on the road, so you want to make sure they’re driving something that handles well, is agile and has as many safety features as possible—especially electronic stability control,” said David Champion, senior director of Consumer Reports Automotive Test Center in East Haddam, Connecticut.
